Nothing screams liberty like a Canadian tuxedo, and that's exactly what Pharrell donned took over the outdoor marquee of The Tonight Show Friday night to perform his newest single, "Freedom." Pharrell was backed by a full band, plus a troupe of dancers, and, before launching into the song's first verse, had a few words with which to ramp up the crowd:
New York City! You know why I love New York City? Because you guys make no apologies for who you are. You make no apologies for your accents, and you make no apologies for the way that you dress. So tonight, I would love for the rest of the world to see what freedom looks like and sounds like. What say you New York City? Say Freedom!
From there things got...strange. Pharrell stood blankly and stared as his band continued to vamp on the nine note piano line that pretty much defines "Freedom." The song itself doesn't begin until roughly 90 seconds into the video, begging the question--what was Pharrell waiting for? To feel free? For it to stop raining? For his UberX to arrive? For us all to remember "Woah, it's 9/11 and he's singing about Freedom? The Tonight Show probably just needed to fill time, but who knows--the truth about last night, and the truth about this song itself--is out there. Conspiracies. Truthiness. Somewhere.
