Insecure's Jay Ellis stars as Micah in the new film Like Cotton Twines. The films is about an American volunteer of Ghanian descent that goes back to teach in his mother's homeland. While there, Micah meets a smart 13-year-old girl named Tuigi who must sell herself as a sex slave to pay her father's debts. Micah eventually battles the "tribal culture, religious customs, and the state itself in order to save Tuigi from a cruel fate." The film, which was directed and written by Leila Djansi, premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival. It was also shown at Urbanworld Film Festival, the International Black Film Festival, the African Diaspora Int’l Film Festival and the Savannah Film Festival, where it won the award for Best Narrative Feature. Like Cotton Twines will premiere January 20th on the Urban Movie Channel (UMC). It has a running time of one hour and thirty six minutes. The film will be available to watch on UMC, which is a "premium subscription streaming service that showcases quality African American and urban entertainment across all genres from RLJ Entertainment." Like Cotton Twines also stars Ophelia Klenam Dzidzornu, Yvonne Okoro, Miranda Bailey, and David Dontoh. The film was produced by Whitney Valcin, Amanda Marshall, Akofa Djankui, and Djansi.
