Transgender Woman Muhlaysia Booker Found Dead Weeks After Viral Assault
The 23-year-old was found dead by a gunshot wound.
A transgender woman who was beaten in Dallas last month by a group of men has now been found dead.
In a report from BuzzFeed News, Muhlaysia Booker was found dead face-down on the street early Saturday morning from a gunshot wound. Vincent Weddington, lieutenant for the Dallas Police Department attributed Booker's death to "homicidal violence" but said there is nothing at the moment connecting the assault to her death.
Following news of her death, Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings tweeted the following statement:
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the murder of Muhlaysia Booker. I call on anyone with information on this homicide to please contact the Dallas Police Department."
The assault against the 23-year-old took place last month when she was attacked by a group of men who punched and kicked her following a traffic accident.
Per BuzzFeed News:
"Booker accidentally backed into a suspect's car and tried to flee the scene, according to an affidavit obtained by BuzzFeed News. The suspect then allegedly ran Booker off the road to stop her, and allegedly threatened her with a gun unless she paid for the damages."
Edward Thomas, who was involved in the assault against Booker, and several other men proceeded to attack her. Thomas and others in the crowd reportedly yelled slurs at her as well, reportedly saying "That's what your faggot ass gets," "Get that faggot out of our hood," and "Shoot that punk ass."
A video of the attack was posted to social media and went viral, with the clip including an audible part where someone can be heard offering thomas $200 to beat up Booker. Thomas, 29, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault for the incident. He is no longer in jail and police are unaware of his whereabouts.
