Mixtape Monday: DJ Rhettmatic x Bad Lucc, PF Cuttin, Krs + More!

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

The leaves continue to fall, and the dope sets continue to drop. Our newest installment of Mixtape Monday includes fresh sounds from Bad Lucc and DJ Rhettmatic, an old school romp courtesy of AbcntMnded, some jazz inflections courtesy of PF Cuttin and all sorts of other goodies. Balancing all that true school era deliciousness is Toronto young gun Krs, who delivers a batch of neo-progressive-future goodness that's so exhilarating it comes with an age limit (only kidding). It's Monday, and so it's time to get right on to it--your week in mixes begins now.

There's no easing around the point--Bad Lucc and DJ Rhettmatic have put together a set that refuses to quit, bridging the gap between true school excellence and modern road-less-traveled goodness. It all flows together so, so seamlessly and the two West Coast legends once again show that an intricately-made mix can be a true artistic expression. What a beautiful way to start the week.

PF Cuttin's latest "Fly Fishing" mix is exactly the sort of set we like to rep on Mixtape Monday. Built out of hip-hop that's just-a-bit rare, it's an exposition of gorgeous loops and effervescent rhyme structures that zigs and zags in all the right places. Rather than stacking the deck(s) with obvious sure shots, this one digs a little deeper into the goodness, and ends up being both familiar and exhilaratingly novel in the process. Pre-order the mixtape before it drops, but be quick about it. Only 150 cassette tapes will be shipped for this one, so get in on it early over at Chopped Herring Records.

One of the most exciting young producers flying across our SoundCloud feed is Krs, a Toronto/Jamaica-based beatsmith who deploys deep, punishing bass at staccato rates that put others' hi-hats to shame. Krs is the founder and marquee artists of the up-and-coming Film Noir Sound collective, and in a recent visit to Toronto's BEVSTMODE Radio, the young gun dropped some of his most impressive solo material, along with a smattering of cuts that prove just how open and hungry his ears can be. If you're familiar with the Soulection-approved work of Oshi, Krs is about to be your new favorite producer. Listen to him do his thing below.

Take one look at the tracklist on this one and you know what's about to go down. AbcntMnded went above and beyond the call of duty putting together a mixtape that touches all the best moments in the catalogs of legends like KRS One, Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest, Beatnuts, RZA, Eazy E and so, so many more. Presented by the always-on-beat Pipomixes, they describe the joint thusly:

"DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE TITLE! This is not a trap mix. Instead, it's a typical AbcntMnded mix; a mix with an exquisite song selection unlike anything else, seamlessly mixed together in a style that has become synonymous with all AbcntMnded mixes. Don't sleep. Highly Recommended." - Pipomixes

That goes double, coming from us.

The way-back boogie is strong on Zaf Chowdhry's newest "Private Wax" compilation, a set made up in large part of selections from the label's deep catalog of vintage 80s and late 70s funk. Chowdhry made the set special for the good folks over at Wax Poetics, and the magazine notes that it was this shopkeeper's easy access to rare, strange and brilliant records that inspired a set made from just that. You'll hear Nina Dunn, Christian Gaubert, Infinity, Royal Flush, Enlightment and so much more. Cruise over to WP for the full story.

Futuronostro 's Mr. Mass hit us with a last-minute addition to the weekly roundup, and now we all get to benefit from it. This two hour RINSE FM France broadcast features the talents of DJ CRAZE, who spins hip-hop and electro with a certain savoir faire. SIMS is no slouch, though, and follows up with another hour of golden selections, proving that they really do know how to do it over on the other side of the pond.

This one originated as a tape cassette dating back to the late 90s, but has just recently reappeared as an analog girl in the digital world. The joint was put together by Danny Akalepse and features cuts from DJ Krush, Common, Black Star, Gang Starr, Eminem and much much more. So much of this golden era material gets flipped and re-appropriated in a brilliant way, so kick back and put this on. It's the good good good.

We were saddened to learn of Koopsta Knicca's passing last month, and now a new mix dedicated to the Three 6 Mafia member has surfaced. It's a bit gangster and more than a bit reverent, just like it oughtta be.

Jungle took their ride on Ninja Tune's Solid Steel Radio rollercoaster earlier this summer, sharing a mix loaded with perhaps the most Okayplayer-ish selections of anything in recent memory. From Onra to J Dilla to The Roots to Flying Lotus, they cover all the bases in a brilliant fashion. And if you'd like to learn a little more about what makes Jungle tick, check out Okayplayer's SummerStage interview with the Brits, shot just before they rocked Central Park back in July.
