Freddie Gibbs arrested in France after alleged rape, Gibbs denies
Freddie Gibbs was arrested in France on Thursday, June 2 as a suspect of rape.
According to a report in French publication La Depeche, Gibbs was arrested minutes before he was scheduled to hit the stage for a show in Toulouse, France.
The warrant for his arrest was issued in Austria, for a rape allegedly committed in 2015. Gibbs also canceled a show in Vienna, Austria last month; in a tweet from May 26, he apologized to fans and cited transportation issues.
Gibbs has denied the allegations through his attorney and management, and has been "calm and cooperating with investigators, despite language barriers." In a statement obtained by HipHopDX:
"SCOTT E. LEEMON, ESQ., United States based attorney for FREDDIE GIBBS states: FREDDIE GIBBS adamantly denies the allegations that have been levied against by Austrian authorities. It makes you wonder why it took almost a year for Austrian officials to bring these charges. FREDDIE will be fighting the extradition request as these are nothing more than trumped up charges."
HipHopDX also reports that Gibbs spoke with the prosecutor general on June 3, and that the official hearing, which will determine an extradition for more questioning in Austria, will take place on June 7. Okayplayer will keep you updated on further details.
Last month, Gibbs announced the impending release of Bandana, the sequel to he and Madlib's critically-acclaimed Pinata LP, during a conversation with Red Bull Music Academy.
