Pass The Popcorn: FOX Orders Pilot For Hip-Hop Drama From Lee Daniels & Brian Grazer

FOX has ordered a pilot for a hip-hop drama from Lee Daniels and Danny Strong entitled Empire. The show from 20th Century Fox Television and Imagine will be executive produced by Brian Grazer, who reportedly has a vested interest in hip-hop culture. The show landed with FOX following a bidding war between the major networks. Empire is described as a character-driven family drama that explores the hip-hop empire. The show, which marks Daniels' television directing debut, will take fans behind the scenes and feature original music alongside tracks from current artists. While there has been no word on whether Empire will adopt New York Undercover's tradition of featuring "live" acts in the episodes, it does not seem far fetched. Empire is slated for production during the traditional pilot season window.
