Pass The Popcorn: A Dick Gregory Documentary Has Been Fully-Funded + Slated For 2017 Release

Dick Gregory, for those too young to know, is an American treasure. Through comedy and fervent activism, Gregory has attained a level of irreverence and countercultural icon-status that few of his contemporaries have reached. Those that have witnessed his dagger-sharp wit in recent stints with fellow comedic legend Paul Mooney can attest, that even 50 years in the game, the only thing that's shown any sign of wear is his face alone.

But even with all he's done to further the causes of civil rights in his half-century of activism, Gregory's story has never really been told. Until now, that is, with director Andre Gaines' forthcoming and fully-funded documentary treatment Dick Gregory: How To Survive In America now slated for an early 2017 release. According to Forbes, the doc will focus on contextualizing Gregory's successes in shaping the conversation on racial equality in America for a new generation that is already continuing his trailblazing legacy in more ways than they can imagine.

After the initial crowdfunding campaign for the film garnered a few massive cosigns from comedians like Judd Apatow and Bill Maher, it quickly reached it's $200,000 goal in under two weeks and began the process of actually bringing this thing to life once acclaimed indie film producer Chad Troutwine (of Freakonomics fame) stepped in to complete the campaign. And while there's no official trailer for the film just yet, Gaines has released a video of him speaking on the Dick Gregory doc, which you can watch below. And for those itching to see the legend in the flesh, he'll be hitting the stage with Mooney once more on November 1st at BB King's in NYC.
