On Friday, Magill and a group of friends went to the Thomas Jefferson statue where white supremacists were gathering with torches. That mini rally ended with a scuffle and chemical agents being thrown. According to Magill's friends, the librarian was struck in the neck with a torch.

Mcgill's wife, Sena Magill, talked to Buzzfeed and she said that the "carotid artery" in Magill's neck was dissected, which lead to blood clots that caused the stroke.

However, Tyler's brother-in-law Loren Mendosa, who visited Tyler in the hospital, also talked to Buzzfeed and said that cause-of-injury talk is still premature. saying" "That is pure conjecture on people's part. They are inferring that because that's what they want to hear." Mendosa also said that the stroke could have been caused by a number of factors, from trauma to the neck to smoking.

Even after the volatile Friday, Magill was at the “Unite the Right” rally over the weekend. He was one of the protesters shouting down“Unite the Right” organizer Jason Kessler.

Tyler's friends have started a GoFundMe to help pay for his care. As of now, the GoFundMe has collected $98,000.
