The show is lauded for its exploration of topics including, but not limited to: depression, trauma, and therapy, as well as society's obsession with celebrity and media culture. After premiering in 2014, Comedy Central acquired linear television rights to broadcast the show on July 2018. The deal made Bojack the first Netflix original series to be syndicated on network television. The show received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program for last season's "Free Churro" episode.
