On the heels of last year's sprawling and characteristically quirky Painting With,Animal Collective has just dropped off a new four-track project. Their The Painters EP, is capped off with a buzzing and buoyant new take on Martha & The Vadellas' 1967 hit, "Jimmy Mack," where the Motown trio's candied harmonies and honey-coated melodies are subbed-out for glitchy electronic suites led by a piercing lone vocal. It isn't the more-or-less verbatim upgrade that Sheena Easton gave the track over 30 years ago. No, this is an entirely new beast, jagged and unpredictable.
