Watch Pusha-T Talk About the Importance of Raekwon's Iconic 'Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...' Album
Pusha talks about one of the greatest albums of all time
“To all of my young niggas, I am your Ghost and your Rae. This is my Purple Tape, save up for rainy days”
Pusha-T raps this on “The Games We Play,” the intro to Daytona, his latest album. When Pusha released the album, he talked about wanting to make an LP like Raekwon’s classic debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…
In an interview with Pigeons and Planes, Pusha said:
DAYTONA is what I’d like to call my Purple Tape. To me the Purple Tape is the holy grail of rap albums, and I tried to do the closest thing I could do to match that energy.
On August 1st, the 23rd anniversary of the classic album, VEVO released a really cool video with Pusha-T, where he traveled to Staten Island to talk about the iconic album.
During the interview, Pusha talked about the making of Daytona. He mentions how he would name songs he loved, and Kanye West would try to recreate the records:
As we listed the songs, you know, I would say things—“Incarcerated Scarfaces,” “Glaciers of Ice”—certain records I was pulling out. As we listened through those songs, we would take them off the list and he would say things like: ‘That’s the feeling! If the record don’t come on and feel like this, see we know that something’s about to happen. You know that something’s about to be crazy…’ If it can’t evoke that feeling, then that’s not what we puttin’ on the album.
