The EP arrives after a public dispute between the rapper and her label, 1501 Certified Entertainment.

Houston-bred rapper Megan Thee Stallion released her new EP Suga at midnight. The drop comes after a tumultuous week for the rising star as she battled in court with her record label 1501 Certified Entertainment and its CEO Carl Crawford.

Arriving with nine tracks, Suga was worth the wait. The intro track “Ain’t Equal” has the same flair that came through the gates swinging on Cardi B’s “Get Up 10” off her debut album Invasion of Privacy. What Megan does on this first song is feed into what her fans were yearning for: her slick wordplay that was on full display on 2018’s Tina Snow

Additional standouts that set off her fans on social media right when the EP dropped included “Savage” and “Captain Hook.” On “Savage” which features a laid back beat Megan’s braggadocious flow lights up the track. “Niggas say I taste like sugar but ain’t shit sweet” is reminiscent of the rhymes from “Da Baddest Bitch” from Trina’s debut album Da Baddest, this release is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this month. What she manages to do on “Captain Hook” is present her sex drive and her affinity for shopping. The bass-heavy beat is ultimately what makes this song work.

“Hit My Phone” featuring Kehlani is another track that is a favorite on Suga. The R&B singer and Megan mesh well together due to their differing sounds. Kehlani is no stranger to catchy hooks and her voice adds a smooth touch to the song. If there weren’t so many issues leading up to the release of this album, “Hit My Phone” should have been considered as a single.

Immediately after Megan dropped her newest EP, she unveiled a video for “B.I.T.C.H.” the first single from the project. In the visual she’s surrounded by black women and dogs, manages to twerk in a lavish jacuzzi with a view and also has a conversation with her alter ego Tina Snow.

Suga points to why Megan Thee Stallion is at the forefront of the hip-hop conversation right now. Her sex-positive bars are relatable, catchy and enjoyable to listen to no matter the setting. We’ll be waiting patiently for what’s next from the Texas rapper.
