Five years after offering a glimpse of a second remix to MF DOOM and J Dilla's "Gazzillion Ear," Thom Yorke has delivered the full clip.
Dubbed the "Man On Fire Remix," Yorke's take replaces the lurking organs of the Born Like This opener with a jolting, glitch-heavy suite. According to a press release, the track is part of Lex XX, an ongoing remix series from Lex Records celebrating the 20th-anniversary of the London-based label. The new edit was initially teased back in 2016 during Yorke's appearance on Benji B's BBC Radio 1 slot, where he briefly discussed his reverence of the holy trinity of sample-based producers (DOOM, Madlib, and Dilla.)
Another Yorke-helmed remix of the track was offered as an iTunes-exclusive bonus for Born Like This. The final solo album from MF DOOM was released in 2009 via Lex. It housed collaborations with Madlib, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, and De La Soul's Posdnous. The project also featured two of few joint cuts with J Dilla. "Gazzillion Ear" and the repurposed Donuts standout,"Lightworks," showcase an uncommon creative connection between two of rap's most unconventional talents. According to Stones Throw, both DOOM and Ghostface were said to be writing to tracks from Donuts before the producer's death. And, at one point, there were even plans for a full collaborative project between Dilla and DOOM. However, the concept was scrapped after the Detroit producer's passing in 2006. DOOM and Ghost's treatments of Donuts songs were eventually released on the 2008 EP, Sniperlite.
