Howard has covered the song before. The track is a mainstay during during her live concerts, and she even performed the track for British pianist Jools Holland’s 2020 New Year celebration show for BBC Music. The original “Higher and Higher” track was recorded at Columbia’s studios in Chicago by Wilson and Motown Records’ house band the Funk Brothers: bassist James Jamerson, drummer Richard “Pistol” Allen, guitarist Robert White and keyboardist Johnny Griffith. The track has been covered by singers like Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morrello, and Billy Joel.
