Lost Thelonious Monk Live Recording Unearthed, Slated for First-Ever Release

A long-lost live gem has surfaced

Another week, another unearthed piece from a late jazz giant. According to Gearbox, a once-lost-but-now-found live recording from Thelonious Monk and one of his most cherished ensembles will finally see the light of day this September as Mønk.

The 1963 performance was recorded in Copenhagen, featuring John Orr on bass, Frankie Dunlop on drums, and Charlie Rouse on sax. Little is known as to how and when the recording was discovered, only that it will feature five tracks, released in both standard black vinyl and deluxe variants. The latter will be limited to 500 copies that include a signature embossed 30 x 30 cm Monk print by photographer Val Wilmer.

Mønk will arrive fresh on the heels of Impulse's recent lost Coltrane album, the late saxophonist's highest-charting release to date.
