Kendrick Lamar Wins an Emmy for Super Bowl Halftime Performance

Barack Obama and Beyoncé also won big at this year’s Creative Arts Emmys.

Kendrick Lamar performs during Super Bowl LIX Chiefs vs Eagles Apple Music Halftime Show at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, February 9, 2025.

Kendrick Lamar took home his second Emmy at The Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which were held this weekend at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. According to the Associated Press, Lamar and musical director Tony Russell won for Outstanding Music Direction for his 2025 Super Bowl halftime show

This marks Lamar’s second Emmy win. The Compton rapper won his first Emmy in 2022 as a performer at the Super Bowl halftime headlined by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.

Beyoncé won a previously announced special Emmy for the costumes on her Christmas Day “Beyoncé Bowl” on Netflix. Former President Barack Obama won for best documentary narrator — in a category that also included Idris Elba, Tom Hanks and David Attenborough. Obama won the same award in 2022 and 2023.

Lamar, like many of the other winners, wasn’t actually on hand at the Peacock Theater to accept his Emmy. The Creative Arts Emmys is an awards show primarily devoted to behind-the-scenes crew members; it's typically held the week before TV stars descend upon the same venue for the bigger Emmys ceremony.

The two nights of The Creative Arts Emmys are edited into a single show that will air on TV on FXX on Saturday. The following day, the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Nate Bargatze, will air live on CBS.
