How to Be Outside, Inside Featuring Yaya Bey
The free-spirited singer/songwriter is dropping a new project this April, but in the meantime, she shares her favorite NYC chill-out joints.
Yaya Bey is no stranger to Okayplayer — she’s a talented singer/songwriter hailing from Queens, NYC, and her dad happens to be the late, great emcee. Grand Daddy I.U., of the legendary Juice Crew. Her new project, Fidelity, drops on April 17, and her montage film “Cheers to Our Fidelity” will be on view at Hanna Traore Gallery from April 15 to 18.
Bey’s favorite NYC hangs include an unassuming cafe in Queens, a Cuban-inspired Manhattan restaurant, and restful, no-stress days at the crib. Check out her picks below
Okayplayer: Where do you go in NYC when you want to be outside without being outside?
Yaya Bey: Little Flower Cafe in Queens is one of my favorite spots to eat in the city. If it's late and I want to be lowkey, but don't want to go inside yet, I'll go to Coppelia. My homie opened up a spot in Bedstuy called Deep Dive Bk. It's a bar but it's like the most lowkey bar possible. It feels more like a really nice living room with wine.
Where do you go when you want to be around people but not with people?
The Noguchi Museum is really calming and it always smells nice in there. Maybe if I want to have a solo lunch date, Peaches HotHouse is nice. I used to sit and read in Maria Hernandez Park. That's really nice on a summer day.
What does your perfect NYC day look like?
Honestly, all I need is food and I can just go home. So maybe like grab pizza from Margherita's on Jamaica or order doubles from TrinCiti and go home.
