Initially opening in 2014 on Broadway, the Kenny Leon-directed production was shelved after a short run. It starred Saul Williams as its lead, featured a score rooted in west coast hip-hop and a plot that explored life after incarceration. According to New York Times, Leon's revamped version of the show will open at the True Colors Theatre, which was founded by Leon in 2002. He aims to bring new meaning to the show in the wake of Ferguson, Black Lives Matter and the current political climate, even reworking some of the show's numbers with spoken word pieces helmed by local students from Spelman College and Clark Atlanta University.
