On the Jess Cagle Podcast, Idris Elba spoke about his drug dealing days, including selling weed to Dave Chappelle as a security guard.
Last may, Dave Chappelle stopped by the Joe Rogan Experience and claimed that Idris Elba used to sell him weed. Recently, the English actor has visited the Jess Cagle Podcast to confirm. While speaking with Cagle, Elba opened up about his brief stint as a security guard for New York City comedy club Caroline’s, saying that prior to acting he “did a lot of things, some things I’m not proud of.”
When asked to elaborate, Elba revealed that he was once a drug dealer and previously sold weed to Chappelle.
“I used to sell weed,” Elba explained. “I did that for a little bit just to, you know, help pay the way. I DJ’ed quite a bit. I was a doorman. I was a doorman at Caroline’s comedy club [in New York], which is fascinating now, when I meet the comedians that you kind of remember the English guy. Tall English guy with the funny accent and the little hair.”
Elba added, “David Chappelle remembers me ‘cause he used to buy weed from me. Anyway, moving on. Yeah, I did all kinds of things to be honest, all kinds of things.”
Elba stars in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which is in theaters now. Next month, Elba will also make a stop to the 2022 Cannes Film Festival to debut Three Thousand Years of Longing, co-starring with Tilda Swinton. Per Deadline, the actor will next star in Baltasar Kormákur-directed thriller Beast, scheduled to premiere on August 19th.
