When The Purple One calls, you run.
If you followed The Purple Saga from cover to cover, you’ve probably heard your fair shake of late-night Paisley Park tales. Prince calling up one of the millions of devout musicians that would probably do some pretty terrible things for the opportunity, greeting them with disarming charm and hospitality, and eventually luring them into the studio for impromptu jams of varying, though consistently ungodly, lengths of time.
Esperanza Spalding, who’s slated to livestream the creation of her new album via Facebook in one 77-hour stretch, had her own very Prince story to share on last night’s episode of Desus & Mero (recently renewed for a second season.) An invitation to spend New Year’s Eve with the late icon arrived, a natural call to arms for the Grammy-winning bassist and vocalist. But what she assumed to be a party turned out to be the perfect ploy to draw Spalding into the laboratory for an extended stretch. Nearly three days, as she puts it, with no pause.
Watch Esperanza Spalding tell her Prince tale above. She’ll hit the air on September 12th for another three days and change to record Exposure, a follow-up to her experimental 2015 album, Emily’s D+Evolution.
