Bernie Mac is getting the biopic treatment.
John Legend’s Get Lifted production company plans on making a biopic about Bernie Mac.
The news was revealed by Legend’s producing partner Mike Jackson during a panel discussion the two were a part of at the 2021 Tribeca Festival. Per The Hollywood Reporter:
“We just partnered with Bernie Mac’s estate to cover Bernie Mac’s story,” Jackson said, seemingly surprising Legend as he said the info was “something that John doesn’t know about yet” and that he was “very excited about” the deal, which “just happened today.”
“Look at you breaking news over here,” Legend said in response.
The pair also clarified that the project will be a feature film biopic. Legend and Mac worked together on the 2008 movie Soul Men before the comedian’s passing that same year. Legend reflected on working with Mac on the film, saying: “He truly just got joy from lighting people’s faces up with laughter.”
Legend also spoke on the importance of the comedian’s Bernie Mac Show, saying: “It was beautifully done…. His humor was always edgy but it always had so much heart to it at the same time. You could tell he was a family man. You could tell that he loved the people he was talking about.”
Mac passed at the age of 50 from complications of pneumonia in his hometown Chicago. In 2016, he was honored with his own day in the city.
In related news, Cedric the Entertainer shared last year that he’s been thinking about a Kings of Comedy reunion. In 2000 came the release of The Original Kings of Comedy, a stand-up comedy film that featured Cedric, Steve Harvey, D.L. Hughley and the late Bernie Mac.
“It seems like it may be actually getting a little closer,” Cedric revealed in an interview last year. “There’s some talks of possibly doing a very limited run for the fun of it, doing like a 12-city run.”
