Fox is premiering a new reality show in which viewers will have the chance to decide a verdict in a civil case.
Called You The Jury, the series will feature high-profile defense lawyers arguing civil cases that are "ripped-from-the-headline."
A synopsis of the show is as follows from Fox:
"[You The Jury] will address hot-button issues that define America today. Whether it's online trolling and the limits of free speech; the constitutional clash of gay rights with religious freedom; or whether someone's death was the result of a tragic accident or something far more sinister, You the Jury will investigate the law and the intense human stories behind it. In a dramatic twist, the closing arguments will be presented by the plaintiff and the defendant as they sit across from one another."
The most alarming aspect of all of this is that Benjamin L. Crump, who served as the lawyer for the families of Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and Michael Brown Jr., will be a part of the reality courtroom series. Crump will be joined alongside fellow lawyers Jose Baez (the attorney for the infamous Casey Anthony case), Joseph Tacopina, Areva Martin, Mike Cavalluzzi and Charla Aldous in "question[ing] and cross-examin[ing] the litigants and expert witnesses, as they present their arguments to America and former judge of the Superior Court of California LaDoris Cordell."
The entire series comes across as tasteless, considering that these pivotal cases took some time to be handled and that many of the people involved in these cases are still affected by them, only for them to be transformed into 30 minutes of entertainment.
And in regards to Crump, you can't help but wonder if he will use this platform to actually speak out against police brutality or not.
