This is the second Yasiin Bey (or Mos Def) album to be certified gold in the United States. His 1999 debut Black on Both Sides was certified gold in 2000.

While most people viewed that debut as a classic, the more experimental The New Danger got mixed reviews upon its release, despite the fact that "Sex, Love & Money" got a Grammy nomination that year.
