Heds & Dreds: Pusha T x Jamaica + The Nyabinghi Drums of "Pain"
Pusha T dropped his new Kanye-produced joint "Pain" yesterday, a collage of his usual tuff rhymes, some auto-croon from Future on the hook and...Nyabinghi drums? Yes, I. Pusha is no Rasta but the beat is built from the unmistakable nyabinghi drum pattern that inspired Bob Marley's "Rastaman Chant" and Cymande's "Zion I" among many other classics. Now jacking for beats is a time-honored rap tradition, but in Pusha's case the Jamaica connection appears to go a little deeper. LargeUp's Jesse Serwer has the story:
Lately, G.O.O.D. Music rapper Pusha T has been quoting torrents of dancehall lyrics on Twitter (from Bounty Killer and Vybz Kartel to Chan Dizzy and Demarco) during what he calls “Dancehall Sundays.” Few notable rappers these days are up to di time with their bashment tunes, but the Virginia MC has been repping the culture from his early days in Clipse through to his G.O.O.D. tenure, from the “Selector Remix” of Clipse’s classic “Grindin” to this year’s soundbwoy-dusting smash, “Mercy.”Which brings us to Pusha’s just released “Pain,” the first single from his upcoming G.O.O.D. debut.
