Janelle Monáe hit the stage in New Orleans for Essence Festival 2013 with a 70-minute set that included ArchAndroid classics and new material from her forthcoming LP The Electric Lady. Janelle Monáe peppered the performance with a series of upbeat covers including Michael Jackson's "I Want You Back" and Prince's "Let's Go Crazy." Janelle Monáe also paid tribute to the godfather of soul with a cape routine during her performance of "Tightrope"; Janelle Monáe's stage show is heavily influenced by the moves and musical influence of James Brown. Closing the show with "Come Alive (War of the Roses)", Janelle Monáe descended upon the crowd to dance in the aisles with the energetic audience. The song was capped by a happy ending that only a rockstar could love, as Janelle Monáe dropped the mic and dismantled the drums before storming off stage.
