NFL star turned serial murder Aaron Hernandez has hanged himself in prison, according to Massachusetts prison officials.

He was found at 3:05 am this morning. Health officials tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at 4:07 am, at UMass Memorial - HealthAlliance Hospital. He was 27.

At the time of his death, Hernandez, who was a star tight end for the New England Patriots, was serving a life sentence for killing a man named Odin Lloyd in 2013. His lawyers were working on an appeal for that trial.

More recently, Hernandez was in the news because he was just found not guilty of another murder. Last week he beat two counts of first-degree murder in the shootings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, from 2012.
