A 19-year-old has become the youngest person to ever run for office in Georgia.

In a report from Fox 5 Atlanta, Mary-Pat Hector has been added to the ballot list as a candidate for the new city of Stonecrest's election for City Council.

Hector was at first challenged by her opponent George Turner, who argued that Hector's campaign broke Georgia law (candidates must be 21 or older, unless a city ordinance states otherwise). However, the DeKalb county board of elections ruled in favor of Hector, stating that she was allowed to run because the Stonecrest City Charter declares that candidates must be over voting age to run.

"Justice was served, and the law prevailed. The board's decision is a testament to the inclusion of the next generation's participation in the democratic process," Hector said in a statement. "As the youngest woman to be eligible to run for elected office in the history of the State of Georgia, I thank the DeKalb County Board of Registration and Elections and those who stand with me and support my candidacy and those who taught me and mentored me throughout my life. I look forward to continuing my campaign and serving as the first council member for the fourth district of the city of Stonecrest."

Hector is currently enrolled as a student at Spelman College, and also serves as a youth coordinator with the National Action Network. The city council election occurs on March 21.

In similar news, a 22-year-old is currently running for mayor of Detroit. Back in January Myya D. Jonesannounced her candidacy for the position in an interview with the Detroit Metro Times.

"While I was interning in Congress, I knew [politics] was something I wanted to do," Jones said. "I want to give the voiceless a voice."

Like Hector, Jones is still in college, where she is studying business management at Michigan State University.
