Watch The First Trailer For Netflix's 'Dear White People' Series

UPDATE: Following the trailer and release date announcement of Dear White People, a number of white people have canceled their Netflix accounts, and voiced their opposition to the series via Twitter. Someone even said that it "promotes white genocide," which absolutely makes no sense considering in that 34 second teaser there is nothing that remotely suggests a white genocide.

A trailer for the forthcoming Dear White People Netflix series has been released.

The 30 second clip gives us a glimpse of what the series will be about, with biracial student Samantha White broadcasting what Halloween costumes are appropriate and not appropriate for her white classmates at Winchester University to wear on her "Dear White People" radio show.

"Dear white people. Here's a list of acceptable Halloween costumes," White begins. "Pirates, slutty nurse, any of our first 43 presidents. Top of the list of unacceptable costumes — me."

The trailer then transitions to images of white people in blackface, before a group of black students crash what seems to be a predominantly white Halloween party.

The announcement that a Dear White People Netflix series was happening, came about several months ago in a report from Variety. The series will follow a similar narrative to its film counterpart, which is based on director Justin Simien's own experiences at a predominantly white school.

Simien will write the series and direct all 10 episodes, while Lionsgate Television (who also co-released the film of the same name two years ago) will produce the show.

Brandon P. Bell will be reprising his role as Troy Fairbanks, and Logan Browning (Tyler Perry‘s Meet The Browns and VH1’s Hit The Floor) will be taking the lead role of Samantha White (originally played by Tessa Thompson).

Nia Long is also part of the cast. Long will portray an African American studies professor at Winchester University with whip-smart intellect and unflappable confidence, whose pulled together professional life contrasts a more complicated personal one.

Dear White People will premiere this year on the online streaming service on April 28. Check out the teaser trailer for the forthcoming series below.
