RBMA Bounce Ballroom Brings Down The House [Photos + Recap]

The 2014 Red Bull Music Academy Festival kicked off its month long series of cultural events in a major way with last night’s Bounce Ballroom held at the Brooklyn Night Bazaar. With legendary DJ’s Bobby Konders, Todd Terry, Mike Gip, Sliink and MikeQ laying down some serious tunes, each dance crew showcased one of four distinct dance styles popularized in New York/New Jersey that took the world by storm, namely Bruk Up/Flexing, Housing, Jersey Club and Voguing. From the star-billed dancers who showed and proved on the multiple stages set up throughout the venue why they are the best at what they do, right on down to the casual two-stepper, there was more than enough fancy footwork to go around as several miniature jam circles cropped up throughout the night. Suffice to say, everyone came correct and RBMA succeeded in transforming the cavernous Greenpoint warehouse into a dance party of epic proportions. If you’re still trying to wrap your head around the smorgasbord of talent that was on display, click through the gallery of striking images--captured by photographer Eddie Pearson--above then ask yourself why you weren’t dressed to sweat with the rest of us. Don’t fret about missing out though. There’s a lot more in store from RBMA this month, including tonight’s William Onyeabor tribute at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In the meantime, you can make some better choices--like checking out the full RBMA ’14 lineup and listening to the Bounce Ballroom mix DJ Star Eyes put together especially for OKP.
