Questlove Japan instagram

Y’all may already be aware that while on tour in Japan Questlove made some comments on his instagram account, in conversation with celebrity chef Padma Lakshmi and booking agent Dawn Englehart which many people took as offensive to Asians and have prompted accusations of racism. Questo took to his facebook account today to address the issue directly. Here is what he had to say:

ok. addressing the elephant in the room on christmas

unfortunately, i’ve offended my asian brothers & sisters with an IG post which i made during my recent tour of japan. in that post, i likened a japanese department store employee’s vocal intonation to that of a (church) deacon speaking in tongues. clearly, i didn’t intend to offend anyone (asian or otherwise), clearly, i *thought* that comparison was funny-cute

… and clearly i thought wrong.

in hindsight, it’s easy to see how my post was yet another example of the ugly, american flipping yet another ugly/racially/culturally insensitive script. so, let me make this abundantly clear….

THE ISH THAT I SAID WAS DUMB (PERIOD).

And no, it wasn’t Duck Dynasty/Phil Robertson mean spirited-xenophobic dumb (but the last time i checked, sleep was still the cousin of death)

—look. i’m a human being and dumber yet, i’m a public figure. if you’re lucky enough to be either of the aforementioned, then not only should one stay clear of saying or writing hurtful things, one should actively work against feeling comfortable, thinking hurtful thoughts. given that black culture consistently finds itself at the butt end of so many offensive “outsider” jokes, I should be way, way more sensitive (after all, who’s zooming who). I for one, should never allow my cultural bias to take precedence over my “examined life” (clunkers be damned). i know the whole kinder and gentler thing reeks of a self serving political correctness, but eff it, it’s “all me”.

so, here i am once again, publicly coming to terms with some more of my stupid “say, say, say” ish. allow me to ask for forgiveness and understanding from anyone that i’ve offended. I will be better in 2014 (i promise)

-thank you.

sorry.. im not as experienced at being a racist asshole like quest. i’ll keep working on it

    • Action Ant

So a nobody hops on a hip hop site and throws a bunch of slurs… Obviously upset with his own life and where it’s headed. He switches tabs back and forth from interracial porn to google opportunities to try to get his otherwise-ignored voice heard on a site where no one would agree with him. Fox news is on a commercial break, you’re out of lotion and can’t find your butt-beads… so what do you do? You head here and I try to troll your heart out. The sadness. ::bows::

    • beefycrunchburrito

yeah.. i like watching black women getting gang banged by big white cocks. cause thats all nigger women are good for. fox news? really? i get real news from stormfront org WHITE PRIDE BITCHES

    • KC

      yawn.

    • GTFOH!

You’re the definition of a fuckin’ TROLL! I wonder how many “niggers” or “gooks” you’ve said that word to in their face… ? None. Because you’re a troll. Saying extra shit ’cause you ain’t got the heart to do it in real life. You half -a- bitch. In fact, every comment you’ve ever made here has been Mitch-like, dickish, bitch made and of a pussyfied nature. You sound like you need a good cry…

    • beefycrunchburrito

      lol

    • Mr. X

Using the words nigger and gooks nonstop, you showed your true colors as well. Trust me, your words are unwanted, you are unwanted, your words is unnecessary, and your life is also unnecessary. Maybe the best place for you to go right now is in traffic don’t you think? That’s the best place in the world I hear for all trolls.

    • beefycrunchburrito

      lol.. u dun got troll’d

    • Mr. X

I eat trolls for breakfast. I got plenty of time to do battle with them. I’m on winter vacation for two weeks so it doesn’t bother me to write back… You slut. You got trolled.

    • equerry

Meh. Actually, the troll ate YOU.

You see, the whole point of trolling is to get an emotional reaction to offensive material. Someone getting intellectual, actually providing detailed logic and argumentation, well, that’s even better for the troll. You’re trying to use logic where there is none, and logic and reason only work when the person you’re talking to uses their own. Beefy hasn’t chosen not to do this, thus devouring his opponents whole and with little fanfare.

    • Mr. X

Nah, he only wins if he can continue to troll and keep it up. I can keep this up longer than him. Trust me. I’m what you would call an anti-troll. I get a kick out of it to be quite honest with you. You see he never replied back although I asked him too.

    • equerry

Only reason I disagree with this is that trolling is not a sustainable endeavor. He provoked a reaction, received said reaction and scooted.

But, really, who cares? Either the kid is playing ignorant or he truly believes what he’s said. Reason can’t win with one who doesn’t appreciate it. And with that, good day, my good man.

    • QuestRov

    • cool

wow..just wow. say that to his face, without a gun.

  • Mr. X

Honestly I found nothing wrong with what ?uestlove said personally. As a resident of Tokyo for the past 10 years and probably for the rest of my life, I’ve been here long enough to understand the culture and the people.

One of the many things that urk me here is maybe what he is referring to. Many shop clerks, especially women seem to have a second voice that they use with the public that is very annoying. I can’t even explain it but can just simply describe it as annoying.

One thing you hear for example is the store clerks saying “irasshaimase!” every time a customer enters the store. It means “welcome to the store”. I hate it enough because they say it non stop and they say it without any emotion or feeling behind it, they just say it like a programmed robot. It’s not authentic and just too many customers, they should stop saying it. But the other thing is the intonation and the way they say it. The women, although grown sound like characters from a children’s animation. It’s just annoying to hear that every five seconds.

PS. I don’t liken this to a Japanese person’s personality or to traditional Japanese culture or anything special. I personally think no offense should be taken to what he said. He made an observation just from being a guest here about his experience (which is true) and spoke on it. Can we stop being so politically correct.

I’ve probably said 100+ things worse than this on my Facebook wall, but like I said I’ve been here for 10 years and will probably be here another 50+ years. If I hated the country or the people that much don’t you think I would have been gone a long time ago? I bring up issues I have being here publicly because I intentionally want my Japanese friends to see it and read it so that they can realize the error of their ways and change it. Trust me lots of stupid things are said and done here that are offensive to American culture as well, but they are not worldly people and don’t know any better. If you don’t tell them something is wrong they won’t know about it.

In this case stop saying welcome to the store every five seconds in a Pokemon voice if you don’t really mean welcome to the store. It bothers me as a patron.

    • Dee Lo

Your personal annoyance with a cultural habit which actually has no negative connotations whatsoever completely justifies the widespread casual acceptance of the ridicule of Asian folks. Cool story, Hansel. It was totally relevant.

    • fay_jay

Where was the complete justification of the ridicule of Asian folks?

  • Disappointed

Hint for Questlove, which you should know: If you have to ask “is it racist…?” it probably is. Your comments are insensitive and disappointing as hell. And while we’re at it, the use of “ish” and “eff” to self-censor “shit” and “fuck” in your cute little apology is whack. Just say what you really mean and try not to be dumb about it.

    • Mr. X

      Well that’s dumb logic.

“If you have to ask “is it racist…?” it probably is.”

White supremacist say racist things all the time, constantly, and they are not thinking “was that racist what I just said?” They believe what they say to be true, and in their minds they don’t think it’s racist. Just because “they” believe it’s not racist doesn’t make it so.

When people have their own set of ideologies this whole notion of right and wrong has different meanings to them than normal people.

    • Disappointed

Generally when people ask “is it racist”, it’s not a sincere question but a qualifier, as in “I know this is offensive but I’m going to say it anyway.” As a black person I’ve heard it wayy to often which makes hearing it from Questlove all the more disappointing.

  • Devon Cory

Goodness, some of you people are awful. Questlove seems like one of the most genuine guys around. Bad jokes happen. Tosh.O does it every single episode of his show and nobody gets offended. They laugh. Yes, people make mistakes, and should know by now what is OK to post and what is not, but let’s chock it up as an L for Questlove and move along.

    • QuestRov

nah.. QuestRov wuz keepin rearz wen he hate on azn.
      this is juss damage controrrrr
tosh o buirt his career on being a racist faggot. prenty of ppr hate him… and by L.. dont you mean R .. ROR

    • jbrisby

Lots of people are offended by Daniel Tosh. The difference is, he doesn’t give a fuck, as he shouldn’t.

  • Stephanie Gunawan

Read the other post, he apologized for ONE of the Instagram post. He didn’t apologize for mocking Asian accents by swapping Ls and Rs, something he’s been doing since at least 2012. And where’s Padma Lakshmi in this?

    • bill

Where is Padma? Not giving a s..t. Just like every single one of the asian friends, and family, in SF that I’ve grown up with…petty.

  • Raul H Vidaurre

This is total bullshit! People need to stop being do Goddamn sensitive and getting offended by any stupid little remark. Quest, from what I know of him, without actually knowing him didn’t mean any disrespect, this shit happens all the time, specially to celebrities and other personalities… I take pictures of my girl, nude and people get offended, if you don’t wanna see something, don’t look. It’s that simple.
People shouldn’t need to apologize for personal conversations they have with friends, even if these are held in “public.” One should be able to joke and express themselves freely on their personal pages without having to worry about other people’s reactions. If you don’t like what someone says, then simply reply or stop following them, just as you have a right to express yourself, everyone else does as well… A joke is a joke. If you think a comment like Quest’s is offensive you need to get a f’n life!

  • Dres ThaBeatnik

It just means that Your Celebrity is Growing. You did the right & necessary thing. K.I.M. Good Brother. What’s Crazy is that 10 years ago You would have been called The Afro Haired Drummer for a Philly Rap Group. MAKE EM SAY YO NAME!!!

  • jbrisby

It’s a huge mistake to apologize to the Offensenati. It only encourages them to demand more next time. Nobody has the right to not be made fun of. PS dude, shave that nasty beard before someone tries to stick a dick in it!

  • jbrisby

My, how the definition of racism has changed. Remember when it meant an entire group of people were marginalized, abused, deprived of rights, deprived of voices, deprived of freedom? Now apparently it means something pissed off a minority.

    • rawrrawr

racism – “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race”

nope. looks the same to me.

  • bill

    Lidiculous aporogy…

  • Furd Terguson

Racism is okay if Time magazine declares you as “Coolest Person of the Year”. Everyone dismisses the ridicule of non-English speaking Asians or Asians with “broken English” as nothing but a harmless “joke”, but the last time I EVER seen black folks being okay with Asians “making fun” of they way they speak was the 3 Chinese dudes in ’80s’s movie, The Last Dragon (which was only possible because the 3 Chinese dudes were meant to be the “joke” themselves). Imagine if a current famous Asian person (famous in American media, and there aren’t many, but anyways) went around doing “jive talk” like from the ’70’s movie “Airplane” whenever they encountered a black person. I doubt many people would find that “cute”. I ain’t mad at ?uestlove. I honestly expect casual PUBLIC racism towards Asians as a default in society and I’m actually surprised when non-Asians are NOT racist towards Asians during moments where cheap laughs are easy. Whatever. Until Asians start actually shaming the fucking SELLOUTS and getting angry in the way that black folks did when Don Imus said “nappy headed ho”, shitting on Asians will always be “okay”, thanks in major part to the “yellow pass”. What’s pathetic about the “yellow pass” is that it’s passed out generously just avoid the baseless accusations of being “oversensitive”. I actually hate the fucking sellouts more than the people saying/doing racist shit. It’s okay to spit in an Asian’s face because, hey, it’s not as bad as [insert historical racial injustice here].

  • Furd Terguson

(Repost–by the way: that’s fucking hysterical that you guys will leave up comments saying “niggers” and “gooks”, but you’ll delete MY below comment.)

    • HustleswithRussel

Bro, I understand you’re passionate and a bit upset… But this the internet. You gotta give it time to post. You can’t go all Che in your ranting and expect it to show right away. When you do that you end up reposting 3 times in a row and look like an attention starved asshole that no one listens to in real life. Pity too because you made some valid points. But again this is the internet. People won’t respect those points because they won’t get over the fact that you came off like a deprived whiny bitch.

    • YELLOW PERIL

I really don’t give a shit if some internet hall monitors like you have a problem with the fact that I copied and pasted a comment under the impression–whether right or wrong–that there was unfair censorship going on. If I was wrong, then fault me for misunderstanding the posting behaviors of this website–but an entire ad-hominem paragraph enforcing asinine internet “rules” (for example: comments in all-caps = “yelling” and somehow hurts your ears/eyes) is even more lame and useless than what you insinuate about what I did. It’s a shame that you opted to give backhanded insults for a quick self-pat-on-the-back rather than offer a valid argument. You’re right about one thing though: whenever I or anybody else stands up for Asians in conversation, no one listens.

  • pipokun

that’s cool, but japan has got to be one of the first countries outside the US to host the roots for shows. don’t ya’ll go WAY back? c’mon son.

Why can’t this man make an apology for what he said without comparing what he said with what Phil Robertson said, thats what I would call deceitful, not a true apology, Phil said what Phil said, you said what you said, trying to vindicate his own words co.pared to another’s to make him not look better.. so why don’t you be a man and don’t try escaping your wrong, by shifting to someone else’s wrong, this is just my opinion nothing against anyone,

so anytime a movie has a stereo typed asian character its racist? anytime SNL makes a joke involving a race its racist? why do people get offended so easily? you go to a foreign country and you find their language a bit comical that makes you a racist? man people lighten up, even if the comments were rude or offended someone does not make the person a racist. If this was the case you could always find a way to relate any risky comment to a race issue. its a bit foolish

U people (all people) are the worst. Im guessing nobody has seen an episode of family guy….or madtv??? I didnt realize it til my sister said that family guy was a racist show, so i guess that makes me insensitive towards racial slurs, jokes and just about anything else. But oh what the eff, its a cartoon thats only been on for maybe 10 years. And madtv wit the lady that only knows that “he look-a-like-a man”, is she even asian? I see, its only offensive when its not comedy, its not your racial background thats being clowned. You should be “Disappointed” if you wasnt so busy laughing at jokes aimed at other races. No lies we all have and do. To ?uestlove and everyone else, your response is your responsibility. How you handle it is up to you not everyone else, at least he can admit when he was wrong. How many times have you?

P.S. Tis da season to be jorry, fa ra ra ra ra………

I’d be offended too if I were so busy westernizing myself by changing my name from Bing Mei Wu to Susan and making sure my children sounded their L’s, V’s and R’s all day as they practiced the piano until their fingers fell off. We are all critical of all other people. Just ask Peter Griffin.

  • American_in_Japan

This is not about “Asians” or making fun of “Asians” as Japanese don’t even consider themselves “Asian.” Japanese people sometimes make fun of themselves regarding the “l” and “r” mixup. I’ve lived in Japan for a long time and most people here wouldn’t even care about the comment. It may have been a little tasteless (not very funny either) but nothing for non-Japanese people to get bent out of shape about.

Let’s forget this whole “united Asian front” thing implying that everyone claiming Asian roots should be offended by this comment. Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam…all different countries with different linguistic tendencies when speaking English.

Let’s not make this bigger than what it is.

    • pipokun

you living there doesn’t explain or prove the fact that it’s wrong and tasteless. as a JA, that shit is wack and not cool.

  • shin

I’m Japanese and I wasn’t offended at all by what he said. By the way, bunching up all “Asians” into one group like we’re all the same is more offensive.
