Prince Announces Plans To Publish 'The Beautiful Ones' Memoir In 2017

Prince Is Bringing His Solo 'Piano And A Microphone' Show To Oakland This Weekend

Prince has announced that he is penning a memoir tentatively titled The Beautiful Ones, which will be published by the Penguin Random House imprint Spiegel & Grau in the fall of 2017. Prince delivered the news at a show in New York City on Friday night, noting that the publishers made him "an offer I can't refuse."

"This is my first (book). My brother Dan is helping me with it. He's a good critic and that's what I need. He's not a 'yes' man at all and he's really helping me get through this," Prince told the audience, which included Harry Belafonte, Trevor Noah, journalists and music industry players.

"We're starting from the beginning from my first memory and hopefully we can go all the way up to the Super Bowl," he said.

Billed as "an unconventional and poetic journey through his life and creative work" the book will include stories about the people, places and events central to Prince's creative development during his formative years. Spiegel & Grau Executive Editor Chris Jackson and ICM's Esther Newberg remarked on the forthcoming tome during an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

“Prince is a towering figure in global culture and his music has been the soundtrack for untold numbers of people — including me — for more than a generation; his creative genius has provided the musical landscape of our lives,” said Spiegel & Grau Executive Editor Chris Jackson. Spiegel & Grau acquired world rights from Esther Newberg and Dan Kirschen at ICM Partners.

In an interview at the downtown Avenue Club, Newberg, over pounding music, said she has high hopes for the book. “I think it will be one of the great music memoirs,” she said. “Like Dylan, he writes his own songs, so of course he will write a wonderful book.”
