dilla dig 1999

Moms are the best. We hope that you were really, really nice to yall’s yesterday and finally got her that Benz/dream house/trip around the world. For real though, Ma Dukes is one exceptional momma. After stepping in to stop the sell-off of her late son James BKA J Dilla‘s record collection, Ms. Yancey will now also launch a record label dedicated to her son’s musical legacy. Ruff Draft Records – named after one of Jay Dee’s finest accomplishments – will be putting out unreleased Dilla material, as well as music from Ma Dukes-approved new artists. To celebrate the launch of the label, a bunch of local artists will get together to perform on May 25 at the Magic Stick in Detroit. The line-up will include Guilty Simpson, Bishop Lamont, DJ Spinna, Waajeed and other special guests. It will also be the release party of the label’s very first record, Rebirth of Detroit, which you might have heard Ma Yancey talk about. Peep the video for Danny Brown‘s contribution to Rebirth of Detroit ”Jay Dee’s Revenge” to get the flavor.

“After stepping in to stop the sell-off of her late son James BKA J Dilla‘s record collection”

That’s phrased a bit awkward, like something foul was going on. A lot of people paint the store owner as some kind of bad guy while in actuality he tried to contact Ma Dukes from the start and offered her his full assistance. After she got in contact with him she even explicitly stated the guy did nothing wrong. That record collection could’ve gotten in a lot sleazier hands if you ask me. Glad Ma Dukes got such a hands-on approach though. She seems to get it a lot better than, with all due respect, miss Shakur and ms Wallace did.
