First Look Fridays: Marla Joy - "Tragedy"

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Canadian songstress Marla Joy on the come up is obviously influenced by Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin and she sure knows how to bring it just as those ladies have in the past. Joy, who has been lucky enough to open for and perform with Prince, has released her first single, "Tragedy," off of her debut EP, Perfectly Flawed. In the music video for the track--premiering right here on Okayplayer--her own performance footage is interspersed with retro clips of iconic moments in music history in a swirl of new and old that may leave the viewer dazed & confused about what decade this is--a fitting visual for the song's driving rock vibe, held down by Joy's powerful voice. Watch the video below, stream an older track, "Changes" below, and be on the lookout for more Marla Joy.
