'Mafia III' Video Game Let's Players Shoot Up A KKK Rally

So, we don't normally write about video games, but this one is definitely an exception. Mafia III will dropping early next month, and a trailer for the video game dropped today, which features protagonist (or more accurately antihero) Lincoln Clay shooting up a Ku Klux Klan rally.

So, additional context for this is pretty unprecedented in video game history.

One, well, it's never been done before by what I can recall. Never have I played a game in which you were sent on a mission to unleash absolute destruction on a KKK rally. Second, Clay is a biracial orphan, who was adopted by black mobsters and later served in the Vietnam War. Upon returning to the United States Clay was inducted into the black mob, but then a certain series of events leads to him seeking revenge. Third, the game specifically takes place in the year 1968, a time in which racial tensions were high (the same year in which Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated) and Americans were protesting against the Vietnam War.

So, you end up having a game that addresses issues that, honestly, I haven't seen in a mainstream or even indie game. As Gamespot reported about Mafia III, they noticed moments in which phrases such as "Wage Peace" were spray painted on walls, while in another neighborhood a black man was being bothered by a white police officer, with the black man's girlfriend looked on in terror.

There were also moments in which locals could be heard using racial epithets, while pro-segregation chatter dominated the airwaves of a local radio broadcast.

Although it's unknown just how much the video game will explore the complexities of race during such an intense time in america's history, this is still refreshing to see in Mafia III.

The game drops on October 7, 2016 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. Check out the trailer below.
