Jamie Woon's Infectious New Cut "Message"
For those paying attention, it's been damn near 4 years since UK soul singer/producer/arranger Jamie Woon let loose his brilliantly electric debut album Mirrorwriting. The inaugural outing gave plenty to hold on to, but it's been a tediously-long wait for that follow-up effort, which was teased in no small part by the slippery, synth-soaked groove "Sharpness" early last month, featuring Quadron's Robin Hannibal on keys. And today, Woon has officially announced that he'll be rolling out the carpet for his sophomore album Making Time, which according to FACT, will be heavily rooted in organic soul and r&b, taking cues from D'Angelo's own groundbreaking second-time-out Voodoo.
The Making Time announcement wasn't a hollow one either, as Woon offered another taste of the forthcoming record with a live in-session performance of the infectious new mid-tempo joint "Message," full of buoyant key work and haze-for-days r&b elements, fertile middle-ground between Timmy Thomas's "Why Can't We Live Together" and Childish Gambino's "Sober," with layers of Woon's wistful croon coloring the cut.
