Karriem Riggins creates a Dilla tribute beat

Today, February 7th, is J Dilla‘s birthday, a fact we sometimes almost forget around here, if only because we celebrate that man’s birthday for a whole damn month–and bump his music 24 hours a day 365 days a year. It is, however, only meet and right to raise a lighter (or birthday cake candle) in his honor on this day of all days Luckily, Dilla’s kindred spirit Karriem Riggins–another Detroit-bred master of drums–has given us the golden opportunity to do so. In this Stones Throw/Yours Truly video Riggins not only joins J Rocc and Peanut Butter Wolf in remembering “Dilla the greatest” and discussing his impact but puts his sticks where your eyes can see and actually creates a musical tribute as the camera is rolling, laying down an original drum track over a sampled loop that Dilla once chopped himself for a Phat Kat tune (first person to name the tune and/or original sample gets a free donut on me). Press play below, run some of your favorite Dilla beats at top volume, and eat a donut today.
