Hip-hop artists from multiple subgenres and areas have stepped up to the plate this year to create the timely protest music that Questlove expressed a desire for in December 2014. This weekend, Mic Write has made his own visual and musical contributions with the provocative Onus Chain.
Chace “Mic Write” Morris is an award-winning rapper, poet, educator and activist in Detroit. He has received the Detroit Institute of Arts’ 2016 Alain Locke Award and the 2015 Knight Arts Award, along with being a 2013 Kresge Literary Fellow and a two-time Rustbelt Poetry Slam champion.
After releasing multiple projects as 1/4 of the rap group Cold Men Young and several solo EPs, on Saturday night he released Onus Chain, a new album with a series of music videos combined into a short film. The six-song record and the film brilliantly capture blackness at its most bleak, joyful and rebellious, all at once. Watch the video and listen to the album below.
