If there's anything that can be derived from Charlie Murphy's infamous retelling of his experience playing Prince in a game of ball, it's that both he and Dave Chappelle are diehard fans of The Purple One. More than that, the love was reciprocated by Prince, who famously put Chappelle's frilly-shirted lampoon on the cover of his 2013 single, "Breakfast Can Wait," serving pancakes, of course.

Recently, Chappelle referred to Prince's passing as "the black 9/11," which can be expanded to a global, cultural tragedy from which we're all still recovering. Over the last few weeks, Chappelle has been posted up in Prince's hometown of Minneapolis performing a string of shows at both First Avenue and The State Theater. But on what would have been Prince's 58th birthday, Chappelle ramped up the celebrations, throwing a "Juke Joint" event at the city's Aria club Monday night. About 500 people packed in to that space and witnessed a triumphant salute to "Minneapolis' favorite son," as Chappelle himself put it onstage that night.

Billboard reports that Band With No Name (who has backed both Prince and Stevie Wonder in years past) were in tow as Chappelle ran through covers of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and The Fugees' "Killing Me Softly," even jumping into the crowd to mosh with the audience. And just as the the clock hit midnight, the whole crew launched into a rendition of "Purple Rain." Fitting and proper from a friend and admirer, proving that Dave Chappelle is the Prince fan we should all aspire to be. Jump back to hear how he and Jimmy Fallon got Prince to perform at SNL's 40th anniversary party.
