Bonnie Banane "Muscles"

Last week, a YouTube link appeared in my email inbox along with a note saying “I think I mind-tricked myself into liking this.”  Upon clicking the link I was greeted with Bonnie Banane‘s lo-fi video for “Muscles” from her new Greatest Hits EP.  Shot on what looks like VHS tape in front of a green screen, the video features Banane and producer Walter Mecca dancing in front of clips of MTV’s “The Grind” while Banane sings about her heart being broken and how her man should be “careful with the muscle.”

On first viewing, I wasn’t sure what the hell was going on.  The lyrics alternate between clever and downright insane (“I get pregnant when I see you!” and “Do you want a glass of milk?” are my personal favorites) but the head-scratching gave away to serious head-nodding when the drums and bass kicked in and didn’t stop until the song faded out. Right away I showed the video to a few other people and the same confused head-nodding reaction occurred.

I’m still not sure what the hell is going on in this song and video. But please believe it’s already one of the most played songs on my iPhone.

Bonnie Banane’s Greatest Hits EP is on sale digitally now from her label, Weird Data.

I saw the exchange you had with Phonte on this one. Yeah, video looks liked it was dubbed fresh from VHS at SLP mode, and yet this song is great and corny at the same time, but a deliberate corny. It’s that voice though. If it takes something silly like this for her and Walter Mecca to get notice, one can only imagine what she would sound like on the serious side. I want a T-shirt that says “I Get Pregnant When I See You”. Serious.
