Today marks the passing of one of the greatest that ever did it, mic-wise (THE greatest, if you live on my block). Biggie Smalls AKA the Notorious B.I.G.–who lost his life to an unknown assailant in Los Angeles 15 years ago today and for that reason, lots of tributes of various kinds are and will be passed around like Jamaican lamb’s bread. But the one that gives us the best insight into the thoughts of the man himself has to be this radio interview that Hot97 personality jock Angie Martinez dug up from the vaults, conducted with Big and Mary J. Blige—who pops up towards the end to echo Biggie’s call for an end to the East coast vs West coast “nonsense” and talk about their plans for more collaborations–circa 1996.
Listen below and while you’re in the zone, watch the super-lo budge video for one of Big’s first singles “Party & Bullshit” (above) and decode some of his most quotable lines (“B*tches in the back looking righteous/in a tight dress/I think I might just/hit her with a little Biggie 101/how to tote a gun/and have fun with Jamaican rum”) with Biggie’s Top 10 Jamaican References via LargeUp.
