Afrika Bambaataa in pharoaonic attire

Cornell University professor and museum director? Afrika Bambaataa already had a pretty deep resume, but he’s going to have to add a few more pages to it after this year. Today the b-boy legend shared his ambition to open up a museum dedicated to hip-hop in the Bronx’s Kingsbridge Armory. His plans will only see fruition if they are approved by the New York City Economic Development Corporation though as the empty armory already has several redevelopment proposals. Bambaataa hopes to meet with Ruben Diaz Jr, Bronx borough President, to push the project forward.

The Hip Hop Museum endorsed by and created in collaboration with Afrika Bambaataa, along with other pioneers in the genre, is part of the overall “Mercado Mirabo” development plan for the Kingsbridge Armory. In addition to the Museum, the plan calls for the following: the city’s first affordable Crunch Gym; Brooklyn Boulder’s rock-climbing gym; basketball, soccer and baseball programming; a 6 screen cineplex with the country’s first 4D movie theatre; a business incubator, co-working space and creative weekend market all for local entrepreneuers; two junior retailers; a pan-Latin restaurant “experience”; and a town-square styled art gallery, concert and special event space — all designed for and by the community.
