Marking yet another year of rocking Independence Day in their native Philadelphia, The Roots took it upon themselves to cover Sugarhill Gang's classic proto-hip-hop single "Rapper's Delight" with a very unexpected guest: the city's own mayor, Michael Nutter.

In the midst of a set that included a cameo appearance from CeeLo and more beatbox acrobatics from Jeremy Ellis, Nutter was welcomed out onto the stage (and given a mic that was seemingly running a little low on battery). With The Roots holding down the funky rhythm (complete with cowbell), the city's leader turned out a fairly convincing performance, nailing most of the track's famous lines as he gave his best Big Hank, Master Gee and Michael Wright impressions. Say what you will about Nutter's policies--the man knows how to rock the Nike Dri-FIT golf polo with steez. After nailing the "If your girl starts acting up" line, Nutter boldly dropped his mic right on stage. Really, you couldn't make this stuff up.

According to Complex, Nutter himself worked in a Philadelphia disco during the 1970s, where he might even have been known to DJ a set or two of his own before moving on to the realm of politics. Watch the Philadelphia mayor and The Roots perform "Rappers Delight" below--we guarantee you've never seen anything quite like it.
