As far as early to mid 2000s hip-hop and r&b goes, it’s hard to argue just how pervasive and influential of a presence Pharrell & Chad Hugo were as The Neptunes. Harder still to argue just how the crisp snares, wonky clavichords, bleeps and bloops galore defined that era in sound, rippling into the 2010s on the Odd Future wave. In the time since, Tyler The Creator has been something of an ambassador to The Neptunes Sound, with Pharrell acting as a very real mentor in terms of shaping his craft and fine-tuning his own hallmark sounds.
This past weekend, Tyler, Chad and Justin Timberlake all joined Pharrell and Scott Vener for a very special installment of OTHERtone Radio that delved into The Neptunes’ storied past, their creative processes and even the prospect of new music in the years to come. The latter was a more tight-lipped discussion, but even that was enough to get our blood boiling at even the thought. You can hear Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, Chad Hugo and Tyler The Creator in conversation on OTHERtone Radio by hitting the link below. Let’s hope this a new beginning for the powerhouse production duo, who still vibe like its 2000.
