Mixtape Mondays: Special SXSW Edition f. Erykah Badu, Sango, Bunji Garlin + Much More!
Mixtapes, not to be too dramatic about it, are the soundtracks of our lives. On March 9th we light dutches and play Biggie tribute mixes. On Dilla day, it's strickly the Slum Village gold ringing in our ears. You get the idea. So with all the commotion going down in the Lone Star state this week--you know, that massive conglomeration of industry music and tech showcases called SXSW-- it seemed only right to dedicate our Mixtape Monday this particular monday to the biggest thing happening in the realm of music this week. Accordingly, we decided to create a little virtual Austin right here on OKP by featuring all of the illest tapes from the artists and DJs crowding the star-studded bills of our own 4-part event series showcase. It's the ultimate SXSW singalong, whether you're Texas-bound or just listening in. So buckle up, the road to Austin is a rocky one, but luckily the bus has a/c and a tuner stuck to Okayplayer radio. LargeUp's open-air dancehall bashment on the patio of Empire Control Room & Garage is going to damn near kick off the entire music conference portion of SXSW 2014, setting things off in the proper airhorn-worthy style this Wednesday, March 12th. And in case the line-up of Rice & Peas DJs Max Glazer & DJ Gravy, dancer Likkle Bitt and live performances from Los Rakas and Screechy Dan were not enough, once and future soca king Bunji Garlin has just been added to the bill! To give you a taster of the Caribbean flavors on order we've assembled here DJ Gravy's Back In Time mix of throwback dancehall with Teddy King, Max's official Snoop Lion mix and Bunji's live appearance on the LargeUp Sessions Radio show, broadcast weekly from the storefront of Miss Lily's Variety. Tune in and hit the link below for more LargeUp business.
Thursday March 12th, it's Okayfuture's turn to glow, with a dance party at Hudson on Fifth, co-presented by House Of Marley. We already featured new mixes from Falcons and Brothers In Arms in last week's Mixtape Monday, so this week we round out the roster with mixes from Booty Fade, Chicago's DJ Rashad (giving you a taste of the TekLife program with his 'Japan 20-minute Workout' mix) and Durkin rocking live in Cambridge, Mass. with a 1.5-hour set taped live at CLLCTV BOSTON'S party "The Wave."
Friday March 14th Okayplayer meets the Soulection Label for an epic Showcase of their heavy label roster headlined by Quantic, Emanon and Sango. The Soulection team rounded up a best of the best in SLCTN mixery, featuring sounds from Sango and Quantic as well as performers Carmack, Esta, LAKIM & Dpat. That's a whole lot of futuresoulistic m1xery so start streaming (and hit the link below for more on the event).
