The long-awaited final chapter of Bad Boys has been on the table for years now. As early as 2008, Michael Bay wanted to direct the third movie but noted the cost would be demanding. The movie was originally scheduled for a November 8, 2018 release before director Joe Carnahan backed out of the role in March 2017. The Hollywood Reporter speculated that his resignation was due to either scheduling conflicts or creative differences. Screenwriters like Peter Craig and David Guggenheim worked on early iterations of the third movie’s script. Craig, Carnahan, and Chris Bremner wrote the final screenplay. Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah handled the final treatment.

The original Bad Boys premiered in April 1995. The Michael Bay-directed film earned $141 million on a $19 million budget. Bad Boys 2 hit theaters in July 2003. The sequel had a whopping $130 million budget and doubled it, earning $273 million. This past May, L.A.’s Finest, a television spinoff of the movie series, starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba premiered on Spectrum.

Smith reached even further back into his rap career on Shade 45 with Sway Calloway on Friday. Calloway proposed a special performance if Smith was up to it. After a commercial break, Smith was put on the spot. The result? An impromptu performance of Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff’s “Brand New Funk.” Watch the show below.

Bad Boys for Life, co-starring Smith, and Martin Lawrence hits theaters next Friday, January 17.
