Watch The Valentine's Day Edition of "Freestylin' With The Roots" on 'The Tonight Show'
Every once in a while, The Tonight Show calls upon The Roots to summon their most improvisational selves in a segment aptly-titled, Freestylin' With The Roots. Taking cues from the crowd, the Philly unit transforms the host's notes into full-fledged arrangements, ranging from lounge to disco to blues. Basically a fairly normal night with Questo, Thought and the gang.
Seeing as how Valentine's Day is just around the corner, a dedicated edition of the segment was in order. So last night, Fallon scoured the crowd for participants, sending their seemingly random thoughts to the house band for the freestylin' treatment. What followed was nothing short of impressive, given the circumstances, with Black Thought jotting down bars on the spot and the crew flipping those heart-shaped reflections over a grip of accompaniments. Thought does his best Sinatra at one point and dips into a George McCrae-ish disco thing at another.
All in all, another fine outing with the Illa Fifth, underscoring just how necessary and proper a trip to studio 6B might be for those passing through The Big Apple (or even those native to the five boroughs.) Watch Freestylin' With The Roots down below and keep the love in rotation in the lead-up to Valentine's Day.
