Thundercat on Working With Mac Miller: "I'm Happy I Got a Chance to Experience Somebody Like That"

In an interview with Beats 1 Radio's Zane Lowe, Thundercat told an unheard story about his fallen friend.

Grammy Award-winning guitarist Thundercat was the latest guest on Apple Music's Beats 1 radio show on Thursday night. He and host Zane Lowe discussed his newly-announced album, It Is What It Is, and FaceTimed Steve Lacy to speak about Thundercat's influence. View the full interview above.

Eventually, the conversation progressed towards the album's creative process. Thundercat remarked that the past year has been "trying" and "traumatic" due to Mac Miller's death. On a lighter note, Thundercat spoke glowingly about the creative process working with Miller.

"The moments that me and that man shared when it came to the creative energy," he said, "I'm happy that I got a chance to experience somebody encompassing like that because everything does tend to isolate you in certain respects. It's like, you go too far off into one world, you tend to become biased."

"It almost haunts me a bit, because I told him I loved him," he said of the call. "That doesn't specifically haunt me, but it was literally like I never missed the chance to tell the guy I loved him, and I'm thankful I did."

He also revealed that he spoke with Miller over the phone the night before his tragic passing.

"That night as he was going to bed, I said, "I love you," and he said it back...to wake up to [his death] like, it scarred the hell out of me. And not to make this such a dark moment...but from that moment I was changed forever."
