Who was more influential to hip-hop culture in Atlanta? Jermaine Dupri or Outkast?
That was the question Charlamagne The God asked Dupri when the rapper and hip-hop mogul served as a guest recently on The Breakfast Club on Power 105.
“Depending on what type of hip-hop you talking about, we come from two different places in hip-hop,” Dupri begins his response with. “As far as culture, me. I brought people to Atlanta that had never seen Atlanta. I showed everybody in the world Magic City…I was the first person to start throwing money in the club.”
“I had to pay for all the magazines to come to Atlanta…no one was paying attention to what’s going on…as far as culture goes and having parties, bringing Puff, bringing Envy and Clue to Atlanta, that was all me,” he adds.
Throughout the interview Dupri also discusses his friendship with Usher, his relationship with Bow Wow, and rumors of him and Janet Jackson getting back together. The discussion with Outkast begins around the 34:30 minute mark.
Last year, Andre 3000 referred to Big Boi as the better Outkast rapper, telling GQ “Big Boi can rap better than me — I always said that.”
In a later interview, Big Boi responded to the remark saying that they are “two sides of the same coin.”
“We’re equally matched. Nobody can stop us, together or separate, and that’s not being cocky, that’s being real. I tip my hat to what he said, but we’re equal,” Big Boi said. “He will kill you and I will destroy you.”
