Janet Jackson joined The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday. She discussed her upcoming Black Diamond tour and told fans what to expect from the Rhythm Nation performance. She shared stories of her three-year-old son Eissa’s obsession with classical music. Additionally, she revealed the inspiration by the name of the new tour and album.
“Black Diamond is the toughest of the stones to cut,” Jackson said. “I heard that immediately as ‘hard to hurt, to destroy. In recent years, I’ve come to realize I’m incredibly strong. I see myself as this rock–rough around the edges. I just want to share some of my strengths and stories.”
While she didn’t hit the stage, she still gave viewers a special showing. Along with Fallon and The Roots, Janet recreated her 1995 single “Runaway” with classroom instruments. Watch the full video above.
Jackson also discussed the story behind “Nasty,” and clued Questlove into the secret behind one of her many stylistic staples. All segments are available on The Tonight Show‘s YouTube channel.
Previous guests on The Tonight Show‘s Classroom Instruments series include Aerosmith, Ringo Starr, and the Backstreet Boys.
The Black Diamond world tour kicks off on June 24 in Miami, Florida. Tickets are available for pre-sale now. European and additional world dates will be announced at a later date.
