Cardi B's new "Up" video embodies sex and is her latest single following 2020's "WAP" with Megan Thee Stallion.

Cardi B has officially dropped her first single of the new year, “Up.”

Since “WAP” featuring Megan Thee Stallion was her last official song, it comes as no surprise that this new track premiered with a raunchy, sex-positive visual. Previously when “WAP” released, the Internet seemingly broke with positive and negative reviews. Either way, it went on to become one of the biggest tracks of 2020.

The “Up” video is raging with hormones, at the beginning of it Cardi has a funeral for 2020 then she proceeds to rave about her sex life and of course haters who simply can’t be compared to her. “If it’s up, then it’s up, then it’s up, then it’s stuck,” she says over and over making for a memorable, catchy chorus.

The morning after the track arrived, via Twitter a New Jersey rapper Mir Fontaine accused Cardi of stealing the chorus from a song he'd previously released in September. He tweeted a side by side video featuring his track and "Up," the chorus' for each song are identical. 

Almost immediately after Fontaine's tweet began raking in retweets and attention, a fan account shared that in August, Cardi rapped the hook of "Up." She retweeted this tweet and shared the following on Twitter in response to a fan who was unsure of the debacle, "Naaa im the type of person that avoids problems & court days .If i get inspired by a song I wouldn’t mind giving a percentage or couple of thousand but I never Hurd if this man .I’m glad while I was recording this song in August I was playing wit the hook on this live."

Elsewhere, another highlight on "Up" is this bar: “If I had a dick, you'd probably lick it like a lollipop/Hoes speakin' cap-enese, hit 'em with karate chop/I'm forever poppin' shit, pullin' up and droppin' shit/Gotta argue with him 'cause a nigga love a toxic bitch.”

To add to the appeal of Cardi’s explicit lyrics, the video excellently embodies sex. One scene features the Bronx-bred rapper reenacting a Rolls Royce ornament. Another features her leading a crew of dancers in a routine choreographed by Sean Bankhead. There’s even one scene where she acts as if she’s an oyster’s pearl. The horny police were clearly not on set for the moment when she grabs a vibrator and makes out with a video girl over the course of 10 seconds. 

The release of “Up” points to the tentative release of her sophomore album which she previously has gone on the record and spoken about. In an interview with Footwear News, she shared, “There is definitely a lot of pressure, which is why I haven’t put out the second album. I haven’t rushed it.” She added, “Everybody is waiting for that one little mistake. Everybody is dying to say, ‘Her album is trash, her first one is better.’ I have to play it good and make sure everyone likes it and make sure it comes with sick everything. Just the whole roll out has to be sickening.” 

While expectations for women rappers are typically extremely high, we have reason to believe Cardi is going to exceed all expectations.
